Thinga-ma-jig

March 10, 2011 – Thingamajig Thursday #249

Here’s this week’s thingamajig Thursday.  We’re going to try something different this week.  I’ve been on a bit of a reading binge lately, with the Keith Richards biography being the  selection from popular culture.

Choose the false statement from the list:

1) As a child, Keith was a featured vocalist in a children’s choir that sang in Westminster Abbey for the Queen.
2) Keith once dumped a girlfriend because SHE did too many drugs.
3) One of Keith’s five homes is in a remote part of Iceland near a thermal spring.
4) Keith’s “aura” and mannerisms are the inspiration for Johnny Depp’s portrayal Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean.

Here’s this week’s thingamajig Thursday. Guess where this is.  Some of my co-workers may find it a bit ironic, given an incident that an ex-president dodged in a foreign land.

Here’s this week’s thingamajig Thursday. The name of this dog is Sammy Davis Junior, Jr.  From one of the most charming Ukrainian movies you’ll ever see.  What is the movie?

Here’s this week’s thingamajig Thursday. This one might be a bit tough.  It’s something that came out of Claire’s room when we were cleaning it out getting ready to move the office up there.

Here’s this week’s thingamajig Thursday.  This week is a bit different.  I found this tacked over a hole in the granary.  Not only is it interesting that the soybean oil used to pack these sardines that could have some from this very county where the lid ended up years later on a granary.  The question is, what is the closest (inter)national park to the town where these sardines were packed?

Here’s this week’s “Thingamajig” entry. This is a bit different. The deluge of college letters has started for Claire. I got a kick out of this “Minnesota Nice” letter. If you’re a listener of “A Prairie Home Companion” you know all about the unassuming nature of the people of Lake Wobegone. I would bet that Garrison Kellior mentions this school on occasion during his radio broadcasts. So, I’ve taken the name out of the letter and your task is to guess which polite and unassuming Minnesota college sent this letter to her.

Ok, I’m not looking for candles as the answer to this thingamajig, but what this is and a story behind it.

Also check out last week’s answer.

As always, put your guess in a comment below.

Answer…

This is a “Yule Log,” well a modified Yule Log since the “original” logs were meant to burn for a long time (when the log finished burning, the party was supposed to end) so this is a kindler, gentler version outfitted with candles with the yule colors.

Back to high school biology for this. Everyone knows this is a zinnia flower, but what are the yellow thingamajigs called?

As always, put your guess in a comment below.

Answer…
The yellow thingamajigs are called “disk flowers” and the pink thingamajigs are called “ray flowers.”

Answer…
This is an end bracket for an old barn sliding door. The doors are attached to a pipe with a slot on the bottom that receives the rollers. The end of the pipe is held on the shed with this thingamajig.

canner
As always, put your guess in a comment below.

Answer….
It’s a rack that you put in a canner to hold and pull out the jars (we never use it, since it seems like it increases the likelihood of everything crashing out because 7 quarts of goods are quite heavy).

A little different “Thingamajig Thursday” this week – Here’s something that goes for about 50 bucks on Ebay that I made for Linda with scrap lumber and a couple of small hinges.

It is indeed a mold for pouring soap.

Here’s this week’s “Thingamajig Thursday” entry. Also check out last week’s answer. Here’s something we use in the house AND in one of the outbuildings.
oyster shells

Answer…

Oyster Shells – used for the chickens to have enough calcium to lay strong eggs and used in the corn stove to help prevent “clinkers.”

Here’s this week’s “Thingamajig Thursday entry.” Also check out last week’s answer. Here’s something I look at at least every 4 days!
handle
As always, put your guess in a comment below.

Answer…
It is indeed the “handle” to open the gate on the gravity wagon that lets the grain out at whatever speed needed – wide open at the elevator, and barely open to fill up the 5 gallon buckets for the corn stove.

December 8, 2005 – Thursday Thingamajig #1

As winter approaches and activity on the farm slows down, I take this opportunity to introduce a new feature “Thingamajig Thursday.” This feature will challenge you by showing a photograph of part of an object or a close-up of a common farmstead object. Your job is to guess. Put your guess is a comment. I’ll give you the answer as soon as someone guesses it or the following Thursday.

I’ll start out kind of easy for the first week.

The answer is the frostless outdoor hydrant handle. Here’s a full-size view.
