March 20, 2009 – Skyview Software

Here’s a screenshot of the the Skyview software that remotely monitors and logs the wind turbine.

This shows in the graphs, the watts produced along with the RPMs. The machine is humming along pretty good here, making 2432 watts at the time this screenshot was captured. Although this graph shows a top watt scale of 2600, it does go higher.

  1. Hello,
This might be a silly ? but is that 2432 watts per minute, hour, or a day? How many watts does the windmill make an average day?

  2. Nathan,

That is an instantaneous reading. On the best day the turbine makes 45 kwh a day. Just for reference, we use about 1000 kwh a month.

  3. So are you saying that on its best day the generator makes 4.5% of your average electricity?

  4. On a good day (windy day in March) it makes over 100% of our electricity, on a bad day (calm day in August) it makes 0%. We historically use between 30-40 kwh per day. Yesterday, the wind generator made 45 kwh. Until we’ve had it up for a year, I can’t provide any year-round averages as we are now in the windiest two months.

  5. Thanks for the info. Really enjoy your blog. i like all the different little things to the big projects that you post about. it is a good mix. I am most interested in gardening and trying to live a substainable life. You have a beautiful farm and family. Thanks again for sharing your experiences.

  6. Enjoy reading your updates. How has the software updates helped this week with the high winds? Thanks.

  7. Hello,
I am up to install my skystream (3.7 1.8KW 230v-50HZ)and run in to this site. You are intalling new software. What kinde of software and where can I purchase this. How many batterys do I need if I am yousing 20 Kw a day. Is the use of aircondtion alowed? Almost 12 Kw a day.
On this island the local power is 127v and 220/50HZ. (need some help, information, with installation grid tie and battary back up. The plan is to use battery at night and charge them by day)

  8. Norman,
The software comes free with the turbine. I’m afraid I don’t have any experience with batteries as ours is connected directly into the local utility electrical grid. You’d have to visit http://www.skystreamenergy.com/ for more information or to find out if there is an installer near you.

  9. Hello all at High Hopes Garden, I have enjoyed reading about all your projects, especially the wind turbine. We recently moved to Iowa and installed a Bergey 10 KW wind turbine in Dec. 07. We averaged 48 kwh / day for our first year of metered peoduction (4/1/08 – 3/31/09), our production has been down a little since then, but we are still net zero energy consumption for the year. We also installed a Ground Source Heat Pump, so all of our heating and cooling is electric.
We also enjoy the various discussions on gardens etc. (most recently the bean trellis as none of us like bending over to pick the beans) I am planning to trellis the beans, peas and cucumbers next year. We would also like to get some bees going next year. We were given some old hives and equipment but haven’t taken the next step yet.
If you are willing to share I would like to see your yearly production numbers from your wind turbine. I am trying to keep a list of all the small wind turbines in Iowa with various info like tower height, manufacturer and average annual production.
    Thanks, Paul Rekow
p.s. if you ever come north on hwy 71, we have the wind turbine sw of Spencer.
