Throughout the summer, I’ve posted photos of many tantalizing raspberries. Now it’s time to see the berries in the “off season.”
This is a row of fall-bearing raspberries, mowed down just the other day, ready for another season. I love these guys – they are so easy compared to the summer berries.
OK, I’m curious–I have summer bearing raspberries, and they only bear on 2nd year canes. Do the fall ones bear on first year canes? I love my berries but HATE dealing with cutting out just the bearing canes and over-wintering etc. I’d love to have something easier…
You’ve got it – these canes bear the first year (early fall) unlike the summer berries that only grow fruit the 2nd year and need to be pruned. “Heritage” is the older, standard fall cultivar, but there are newer ones out there. Our girls rate pruning raspberries as 2nd worse job on the farm – only picking windfall apples is less desirable!
