October 26, 2010 – Starting on a Passive Solar Stock Tank

I’m starting to make a passive solar stock tank.  Hopefully, it will be a great improvement on the frozen 5 gallon pails or the energy-sucking electric tank heaters.

OK, so I didn’t get far today.  Look for more later!

This is on our list of things to do this weekend, too! However, we may just make an insulated tank because if we put it where the sun shines most directly it is very far from our water source. I don’t want to haul buckets or hoses any further than necessary through deep snow.
Do you have any good energy-saving ideas for keeping the chicken waterers from freezing? Seems like all those heaters that go under the waterers run constantly.

I have been disappointed that the chicken heaters have not worked very long and were expensive – so I made my own with a 40 watt bulb that used less energy than the others. http://highhopesgardens.com/blog/2010/01/12/january-12-2010-cheap-chicken-heater/
