October 1, 2008 – Woolly Bear
This fall has provided an obstacle-course of woolly bear caterpillars. It’s hard to walk without seeing one of these crawling or cuddled up on the ground.
The woolly bear caterpillar winters in this form, it survives winter freezes by producing a cryoprotectant, a kind of anti-freeze in its tissues.
