November 6, 2006 – Egg Candler

One of the nifty devices we use is an egg candler to help discover eggs with hairline cracks or to see when we are incubating viable eggs.

This is a picture of a “good egg.” You just put the candler (a light bulb on a handle) on the egg in a dark place.

Here’s a picture of a cracked egg. The cracks jump right out at you with the candler.

We got the candler from http://www.poultrymansupply.com/other.html It was less than 10 bucks!

We breed whatever is in the coop – usually an assortment of heavy standard breeds.

Cool, Matt John of Poultryman Supply is the one whose chicken (Elivra) beat our Miss Silkie in Hollywood. He and his wife were really great people.

Wow, it is a small world! Seven degrees of separation may be too many! Linda enjoyed talking to these folks for a long time. Wish we had known!
