July 18, 2006 – Big Beautiful Bug
When I went out to get laundry off the line, I found this beauty on a towel!

I haven’t tried to identify him yet, and couldn’t wait until Thingamajig Thursday to share him. Any ideas who he/she is? It looks cicada-like, but I haven’t heard any buzzing yet. He had a wonderful army camoflauge on the top and delicate veined wings and a nasty face.

Haven’t heard any buzzing yet ..? The cicadas here in Dubuque are deafening. They sit in the tops of the tallest trees and sing their raucous bug-song all day long. We must have had a truly tremendous hatch because I don’t recall them ever being quite so loud before.

I’ve been searching everywhere for the name of this insect, I cannot seem to find it. When I searched “cicada-like insect” your website popped up and the picture is exactly like the one I found!! I found one in Covington, Kentucky a year ago and haven’t seen one since, until tonight, he flew in my hair!! The things are ginormous. I’m thinking they have to be related to cicadas but there’s no way they ARE cicadas. I have neither heard noise and they’re twice the size of a normal cicada. It’s cicada season in Ohio so I’ve seen them recently. Their bellies are a beautiful pasty white, huge wings and for some reason, they seem to take after turtles, they cannot get back up once they’ve fallen on their backsides.

Woo-hoo! They’re called ‘dog-day cicadas’!
