It is indeed the “handle” to open the gate on the gravity wagon that lets the grain out at whatever speed needed – wide open at the elevator, and barely open to fill up the 5 gallon buckets for the corn stove.

Ditto on the gate to a gravity wagon, not to be confused with a grave wagon, or a gravitas wagon, and as opposed to a barge wagon or a paddy wagon (which is most often associated with St. Patrick’s day for several reasons).
